William died in 1844 2 CONC in Rutherford Co., NC. 2 CONT William's family moved from Goochland Co. to Henry Co. VA before the 2 CONC Revolution. At the time this area was on the very western most frontier 2 CONC and remote from Virginia culture. This move may have been necessitated by 2 CONC his father's persistent anti-British and illegal activities. Only eight 2 CONC years old when his father died in a British prison, William was the only 2 CONC generation of DePriest in America unable to write his name. 2 CONT In 1778, undoubtedly remembering his father's death in the hand's of the 2 CONC British, William enlisted in the patriot militia at the Long Island of 2 CONC the Holstin in present day western Tennessee. Serving under Capt. Joseph 2 CONC Martin, he was one of the buckskin clad Indian fighters who protected the 2 CONC Holstin settlers against the British supplied Cherokee. The troops may 2 CONC also have helped the settlers when the people of Holstin severely 2 CONC punished the Tory element amongst them. When Capt. Martin became 2 CONC Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Virginia, he served under Col. 2 CONC Montgomery and was a part of Capt. Evan Shelby's raid against the 2 CONC Chickamaugas. In 1779 the Chickamaugas, who had formed an alliance with 2 CONC the Cherokee and British, became so bold as to constantly execute bloody 2 CONC forays upon the settlements in the area. On the 10th of April Capt. 2 CONC Shelby led three hundred and fifty men, including William, to the towns 2 CONC of the Chickamaugas. The Indians were so astonished they offered no 2 CONC resisitance and fled into the woods. The troops destroyed the Indian 2 CONC towns along with hugh stores of goods kept by British agents to lure the 2 CONC Indian tribes to their side in the Revolution. 2 CONT It was these Indian troops who made up the "over mountain men" who 2 CONC crossed the Appalachians to fight in the Battle of Kings Mountain. 2 CONC William crossed the Appalachians with Capt. Sevier and fought at Kings' 2 CONC Mountain under his command. William and the other men under Sevier's 2 CONC direction charged Ferguson and the British from the south face of the 2 CONC mountain. 2 CONT In the Battles at Monk's Corner and Goose Creek he fought under fellow 2 CONC Huguenot descendent Gen. Francis Marion, "the Swamp Fox". It was this 2 CONC guerilla warfare with Marion which William described as his most 2 CONC difficult fighting of the War. (See his pension application in the Family 2 CONC Album ) 2 CONT While traveling through Rutherford County, NC during the war (this would 2 CONC have to have been just before or after the Battle of Kings Mountain), he 2 CONC met a young woman named Esther Daves and promised to return after the war 2 CONC to marry her. He married Esther Daves in 1783 and moved to Rutherford Co. 2 CONC Esther's family lived on the Stage Coach road between present-day 2 CONC Rutherfordton and Lincolnton in the Sunshine community of Golden Valley 2 CONC near Cherry Mountain. Olive DePriest Williamson, Esther's great great 2 CONC grandaughter said the old Daves home was still standing when she was a 2 CONC little girl in the early 1900s. 2 CONT William and Esther settled on Cherry Mountain where they farmed and 2 CONC produced "cherry bounce", a French cherry liqueur. According to family 2 CONC tradition, the cherry trees for which Cherry Mountain was named were the 2 CONC ones William planted from stock Robert DePriest had brought from France 2 CONC nearly a century earlier. 2 CONT Originally William and his brothers had a 10,000 acre land grant from 2 CONC Gen. George Washington for their service in the War. Some of this land on 2 CONC Cherry Mountain, and hence the grant, remained in the DePriest family 2 CONC until well into the twentieth century. 2 CONT In 1731 William donated a parcel of land to trustees of the Methodist 2 CONC Church "from a sincere desire to encourage and establish the Methodist 2 CONC Church and for the promotion of Religion". William died in 2 CONC 1844 in Rutherford Co., NC. 2 CONT 2 CONT William's family moved from Goochland Co. to Henry Co. VA before the 2 CONC Revolution. At the time this area was on the very western most frontier 2 CONC and remote from Virginia culture. This move may have been necessitated 2 CONC by his father's persistent anti-British and illegal activities. Only 2 CONC eight years old when his father died in a British prison, William was the 2 CONC only generation of DePriest in America unable to write his name. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1778, undoubtedly remembering his father's death in the hand's of the 2 CONC British, William enlisted in the patriot militia at the Long Island of 2 CONC the Holstin in present day western Tennessee. 2 CONT 2 CONT It was these Indian troops who made up the "over mountain men" who 2 CONC crossed the Appalachians to fight in the Battle of Kings Mountain. 2 CONC William crossed the Appalachians with Capt. Sevier and fought at Kings' 2 CONC Mountain under his command. William and the other men under Sevier's 2 CONC direction charged Ferguson and the British from the south face of the 2 CONC mountain. 2 CONT 2 CONT In the Battles at Monk's Corner and Goose Creek he fought under fellow 2 CONC Huguenot descendent Gen. Francis Marion, "the Swamp Fox". It was this 2 CONC guerilla warfare with Marion which William described as his most 2 CONC difficult fighting of the War. (See his pension application in the Family 2 CONC Album) 2 CONT 2 CONT While traveling through Rutherford County, NC during the war (this would 2 CONC have to have been just before or after the Battle of Kings Mountain), he 2 CONC met a young woman named Esther Daves and promised to return after the war 2 CONC to marry her. He married Esther Daves in 1783 and moved to Rutherford 2 CONC Co. Esther's family lived on the Stage Coach road between present-day 2 CONC Rutherfordton and Lincolnton in the Sunshine community of Golden Valley 2 CONC near Cherry Mountain. Olive DePriest Williamson, Esther's great great 2 CONC grandaughter said the old Daves home was still standing when she was a 2 CONC little girl in the early 1900s. 2 CONT 2 CONT William and Esther settled on Cherry Mountain where they farmed and 2 CONC produced "cherry bounce", a French cherry liqueur. According to family 2 CONC tradition, the cherry trees for which Cherry Mountain was named were the 2 CONC ones William planted from stock Robert DePriest had brought from France 2 CONC nearly a century earlier. 2 CONT 2 CONT Originally William and his brothers had a 10,000 acre land grant from 2 CONC Gen. Tabitha 2 CONC was born in Goochland Co., VA 3 Apr 1729. Tabitha was the daughter of 2 CONC Charles Toney and Elizabeth Harris. The Toneys were neighbors of the 2 CONC DePriests on Lickinghole Creek. 2 CONT 2 CONT William's son William, who went to NC, stated in his Revolutionary War 2 CONC Pension Paper: "My father moved before the War from Goochland County to 2 CONC Henry County, Virginia." In 1763 William's brother Randolph purchased 2 CONC land on Marrowbone Creek of the Smith River in that portion of 2 CONC Pittslyvania County that would become Henry County. Shortly thereafter 2 CONC (probably 1765) there are references to "William DePrests Presses" in 2 CONC other deeds. The press appears to be on Randolph's land. 2 CONT 2 CONT William was very anti-British long before the Revolution. Though a sawyer 2 CONC (carpenter) then printer by trade, he appears to have spent most of his 2 CONC life, including giving his life, for the cause of American independence 2 CONC from Great Britain. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1757 William was drafted from the Virginia Militia to serve in the 2 CONC King's Virginia Regiment. When he refused, a bounty of 40 shillings was 2 CONC offered for his capture. In listing the wanted, the September 2, 1757 2 CONC Virginia Gazette described him: "William Depriest, Goochland County, 2 CONC height 5'7 1/2", 24 years old, Brown complexion, country Virginia, trade 2 CONC sawyer." This was the first evidence of his rebellious actions. 2 CONT 2 CONT By 1767, his actions had become much more visible. The October 22, 1767 2 CONC Virginia Gazette carried the following article. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Williamsburg - Col. Terry, from Halifax county, informs that some time in 2 CONC August last a man was taken up and committed to their goal, who upon 2 CONC examination confessed himself one of DePriest's gang, and that he, with 2 CONC others, guarded the said DePriest until he had struck 80,000 Maryland 2 CONC currency, the bills mostly of the Dollar denomination. And some Gentlemen 2 CONC now in town inform that DePriest himself is now apprehended, and 2 CONC committed to Frederick county goal in Maryland. 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT Apprehended in September 1767, William was charged with counterfeiting 2 CONC eight dollar Maryland Bills of Credit. News of his activities and arrest 2 CONC was reported in newspapers throughout the Colonies including Maryland, 2 CONC Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts. 2 CONT 2 CONT Shortly after his arrest, William wrote to his wife Tabitha seeking her 2 CONC aid. Unfortunately the letter was intercepted and delivered to 2 CONC Maryland's governor. It is included in the Maryland Archives. 2 CONT 2 CONT Dear Wife 2 CONT 2 CONT I am very sorry to inform you of this Melancholy News that I am 2 CONC apprehended & am now in Irons at Frederick Town in Maryland I beg that 2 CONC you may take it as easy as you can and come as soon as possible you can 2 CONC to see me and bring me as much Money as you can I beg that you may go 2 CONC about among my Friends and they will help you to Money, After you have 2 CONC done what you can upon Smiths River I beg that you may go into Amherst 2 CONC County and apply to Colo William Cabbel (Col. William died in the Annapolis jail while awaiting trial. 2 CONC According to contemporary accounts he fell into a deep sleep (coma?) on 2 CONC Tuesday, March 9, 1768 and died on Saturday morning, March 13, 1768. It 2 CONC was believed his death came from taking a large dose of laudanum -- a 2 CONC potent elixir of alcohol and opium. 2 CONT 2 CONT A.B.C. DePriest always said his great great grandfather died in the hands 2 CONC of the British while fighting for our freedom. A family myth? 2 CONC Counterfeiting 80,000? That's not criminal, that has to be political. 2 CONC 2,000 would be criminal. The total value of all colonial exports was only 2 CONC 200,000 at the time. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1764 the British passed the Currency Act which prohibited the striking 2 CONC of paper currency in the colonies. This act was causing economic chaos 2 CONC especially in Maryland. Patrick Henry, in a speech before the House of 2 CONC Burgess in 1765, called upon the colony of Virginia to make paper money 2 CONC in defiance of the King but was voted down. He ended his speech "if this 2 CONC be treason, make the most of it!" William apparently did. 2 CONT 2 CONT Tabitha continued to live in Henry County after William's death. During 2 CONC the Revolution, in the spring of 1781, she purchased her own farm on 2 CONC Jennings Creek in Henry County. She and her youngest son John appear on 2 CONC the Henry County Tax Census in 1782. She had 10 head of cattle and her 2 CONC underaged son John, living next door had one horse and three head of 2 CONC cattle. Tabitha sold the farm in 1786. She appears to have remained in 2 CONC Henry County on other property she owned since she is listed on the 1790 2 CONC Henry County Tax List. 2 CONT 2 CONT William DePriest and Tabitha Tony had the following children: 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT 2 CONT i. Christopher DePriest was born in Goochland Co., VA about 1755. 2 CONC There is a Christopher DePriest in the 1790 Rutherford Co., NC census 2 CONC with 1 male 16+, 2 males -16 and 4 females. A transcription of the census 2 CONC by Virginia Greene DePriest notes that Vol. 26 of the Colonial and State 2 CONC Records of North Carolina, edited by Judge Walter Clarke gives his name 2 CONC as Christ'r DiPrist. In Heads of Families at the First Census of the 2 CONC United States Taken in the Year 1790, North Carolina, Government Printing 2 CONC Office, 1908 lists the name as Christn DiPrist. VGD verified this with 2 CONC the microfilm and concluded the first name was indeed Christn. This would 2 CONC make his given name the French Christian, not Christopher. Christopher 2 CONC was not mentioned as one of the children of William DePriest in March 2 CONC 1768 court documents making them wards of the church. If indeed he is 2 CONC William's child, he may have accompanied his mother to Goochland County 2 CONC for Annie's birth. 2 CONT 2 CONT ii. Randolph DePriest was born December, 1758. Other possible birth 2 CONC dates are as late as 1767. He married Anna Barnett. When Hanover was formed from New Kent County the DePriest family was 2 CONC in the new county. 2 CONT He married Judith unknown. Judith was born about 1705. She died after 2 CONC 1755. She married twice. She married first William DePriest. She married 2 CONC second John Hodges sometime betweem August 1749 and December 1750. John 2 CONC was a neighbor of the DePriests along Lickinghole Creek. 2 CONT William and his young family lived in Hanover County until the spring of 2 CONC 1734 when William purchased 200 acres of land in Goochland County from 2 CONC William Swift. In his will William made provisions for the education of 2 CONC five children. In 1749 Judith accounted for the expenses of raising seven 2 CONC children. By 1755, the first time there is an accounting by name of their 2 CONC children, there were only six children and two were underage. By 2 CONC implication, one child had died between 1749 and 1755. Also the two 2 CONC youngest boys, John and Robert, must have been twins born after William's 2 CONC death. 2 CONT 2 CONT The following is an entry into the Goochland Co., VA Records (DB 7 p 13 2 CONC 19) 2 CONT April 1755/17 June 1755: "Randolph DePriest, William DePriest, George 2 CONC Southerland and John Salmon are held firmly bound to John Hodges for 100 2 CONC lbs. The theory 2 CONC is based primarily on the close association of some descendants with the 2 CONC Austin family in Texas and the use of Austin as a first name by one line 2 CONC of descendants beginning in the third generation. By similar logic, 2 CONC Judith could be a Randolph. Judith was a common given name in that family 2 CONC and she named her son Randolph. The Randolph family of Virginia had a 2 CONC very strong tradition of naming a son with the mother's maiden name. The 2 CONC name Randolph continued in the DePriest line for many generations and in 2 CONC several lines. Another possiblity I'm currently researching is Williams. 2 CONT William DePriest and Judith had the following children: 2 CONT 2 CONT i. unknown DePriest. 2 CONT ii. Robert died between 1708 2 CONC and 1711 in VA, at about 43 years of age. 2 CONT He married twice. He married Elizabeth unknown bef 1689. Elizabeth died 2 CONC 27 September 1689 in the St. Peter's Parish in VA shortly after 2 CONC childbirth. He then married Mary unknown abt 1690. 2 CONT Robert was a French Huguenot who immigrated to VA before 2 CONC 1689. The earliest mention of him in Virginia recoreds is in the St. 2 CONC Peter's Parish Vestry Book when the land of Robert Deprosse was among the 2 CONC property to be processed. Based on the date of immigration, he was 2 CONC probably among the group of Huguenots sent to the New World by the 2 CONC British government to quiet unrest in England over the Huguenots who had 2 CONC arrived from France taking prime English jobs. 2 CONT Where in France he emigrated from is uncertain. Virginia DePriest said 2 CONC in June, 1990 that he came from a village between Nimes and the 2 CONC Mediterranean coast. This was a very active Huguenot area and several 2 CONC villages were designated "free cities" for Protestant worship in the 2 CONC Edict of Nantes. Robert most likely left France for England in 1685 when 2 CONC the Edict of Nantes was revoked and violence broke out against the 2 CONC Huguenots. 2 CONT When Robert arrived in Virginia, he acquired land in New Kent Co., VA. 2 CONC On the 1704 Quit Rent Rolls he has 354 acres of land there. In Colonial 2 CONC Virginia the planters (small farmers) generally had 100 to 200 acres; the 2 CONC gentry had 500 to thousands of acres. Obviously, in a world where a man's 2 CONC place in society was partially determined by the amount of land he owned, 2 CONC Robert was not a part of the gentry, but he was considerably better off 2 CONC than most of the common planters. The early records of this family are 2 CONC contained in the St. Peter's Parish records. When St. James' Parish was 2 CONC formed from St. Peter's, Robert and his family were in the new parish on 2 CONC land that eventually would become Hanover County. At the time of Robert's 2 CONC death, the family lived on or near the Pamunkey River. They were near the 2 CONC juncture of the present day boundaries of Hanover, New Kent and King 2 CONC William Counties. Among their closest neighbors were Jerome Dumas, a 2 CONC fellow French Huguenot, and John Shelton, whose daughter would marry 2 CONC Patrick Henry. The name was spelled variously as DuPresse, DePress and 2 CONC DePrest. It was only in the generation of the children that it became 2 CONC DePriest. 2 CONT Robert's Huguenot heritage has always been assumed, but within the last 2 CONC 25 years has been proven to the satisfaction of the National Huguenot 2 CONC Society. He is one of about 450 out of thousands whose origins have been 2 CONC proven to their standards. All of Roberts descendants are eligible for 2 CONC membership in the Society. 2 CONT Robert DePriest and Elizabeth had the following child: 2 CONT 2 CONT i. William DePriest was born 24 Oct 1689. 2 CONT 2 CONT Robert DePriest and Mary had the following children: 2 CONT 2 CONT i. Mary DePriest was born in New Kent County, VA 9 November 1690. 2 CONT ii. Sarah DePriest was born 4 September 1698. 2 CONT iii. Elizabeth DePriest was born in New Kent Co., VA 19 July 1702. She 2 CONC died 27 September 1789 at 87 years of age. 2 CONT iv. John DePriest was born in VA probably between 1704 and 1711. John 2 CONC lived in Louisa Co., VA. 2 CONT v. Robert DePriest was born probably between 1704 and 1711 in New Kent 2 CONC Co., VA.
